BERA (Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry) is an advanced, non-invasive test that evaluates how well the auditory nerve and brainstem respond to sound. At Umang Speech and Hearing Clinic, we use BERA to diagnose hearing sensitivity, especially in newborns, infants, and individuals who are unable to respond to conventional hearing tests.
This test records electrical activity in response to sound stimulation, making it highly effective in identifying even subtle levels of hearing loss or neurological conditions affecting the auditory pathway. BERA is essential in early diagnosis, which helps ensure timely and appropriate intervention for better hearing and speech outcomes.
BERA is commonly advised in the following scenarios:
Newborns or infants who fail initial hearing screenings
Children with delayed speech or suspected hearing issues
Individuals with developmental or neurological delays
Adults with unexplained hearing loss or auditory nerve concerns
Pre-operative assessment for cochlear implant candidates
Post-trauma or stroke-related hearing dysfunction
Because BERA does not require active responses, it is ideal for testing babies or individuals with limited communication abilities.
BERA can help diagnose:
Sensorineural hearing loss
Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder (ANSD)
Auditory pathway dysfunction
Delayed speech due to hearing deficits
Retrocochlear pathologies (e.g., acoustic neuroma)
It evaluates how quickly and effectively sound signals travel from the ear to the brain, helping detect issues not just in the ear, but also in the neural pathway.
During the test, the patient lies down in a relaxed position. Small electrodes are placed on the scalp and behind the ears. Soft clicking sounds are played through earphones, and the brain’s electrical responses are recorded via the electrodes.
The test is painless and typically takes 30–60 minutes. For infants, the test is often done while they sleep or under mild sedation (if necessary and approved by a pediatrician). No special preparation is needed, and results are usually available the same day.
