ASSR (Auditory Steady-State Response)

Precision Hearing Threshold Testing with Objective Accuracy

Auditory Steady-State Response (ASSR) is a cutting-edge diagnostic test used to estimate hearing thresholds with exceptional accuracy. At Umang Speech and Hearing Clinic, we use ASSR to evaluate the hearing ability of infants, children, and adults—especially when conventional tests like Pure-Tone Audiometry are not suitable or conclusive.

Unlike subjective tests that rely on patient response, ASSR is objective and automatic. It records how the brain responds to continuous auditory stimuli at different frequencies, helping audiologists precisely determine the degree and pattern of hearing loss.

Who Needs an ASSR Test?

ASSR is particularly useful in the following situations:

  • Infants and young children who cannot give reliable behavioral responses

  • Children with developmental delays or multiple disabilities

  • Uncooperative patients or those with attention deficits

  • Candidates for hearing aids or cochlear implants requiring detailed threshold data

  • Suspected severe to profound hearing loss cases

It’s especially valuable in pre-verbal children, as it helps determine hearing loss across frequencies essential for speech and language development.

What Can ASSR Detect?

ASSR helps estimate frequency-specific hearing thresholds at various pitches (usually 500 Hz to 4000 Hz), which is vital for:

  • Diagnosing the type and degree of hearing loss

  • Differentiating between mild, moderate, severe, and profound loss

  • Assisting in hearing aid fitting and programming

  • Guiding decisions for cochlear implantation

The results closely match those of behavioral audiometry and offer greater objectivity when behavioral tests aren’t feasible.

How the ASSR Test Works

During the test, the patient is asked to remain still or sleep (for infants). Electrodes are placed on the scalp, and specific modulated tones are delivered through earphones. The auditory system’s response to these tones is measured and analyzed by a computer.

The procedure is painless, safe, and typically takes 30–60 minutes, depending on how many frequencies are being tested. No active participation is required, and sedation is rarely needed—especially in a calm or sleeping infant.
